Determining The Best Online Press Release Distribution Site For Your Business

One of the many questions people ask me as a public relations social media business strategist is, “Are press releases dead?”  My response is always the same, “Absolutely not, but they have gone social.”

The standard press release has evolved to include social or some say interactive internet features. One of the most prevalent is the use of online press release distribution sites.

This is a crowded space and websites come and go without warning or change policies to their service at will. Some are free and some are not and as with most online services, some sites are better than others.

Follow these simple steps to determine the best online press release distribution website for your business needs.

1. Page Rank via Google of at least 5 or higher. Use this URL to identify the page rank of any online distribution website: http://www.prchecker.info/index.php

2. Cost – Free or Fee? One of the most popular free online press release distribution sites is PRLog. If you need a few more bells and whistles try the fee-based PitchEngine, they offer a free trial so you can easily test both services for the same price.

3. Google News –Are a fair amount of press releases published by the distribution site picked up by Google News? To find out got to Google News and do a search for the site using this template: “site:sitename.com.”

4. Traffic – If the website has no visitors then why would you want to use them to distribute your release? Try using Alexa.com, or Quantcast.com for more background on traffic and demographics for the site in question.

5. Results – If the site accepts valid submissions (you have followed all the rules) but never posts your release, they are useless. If your submission is rejected or delayed more than once, it’s time to use a different service.

To maximize your success try using multiple distribution services for publishing the same release to increase your chances of a higher placement in the Google News search results.

GE’s Tweets Fail to Put an End to Tax-bill Brouhaha

General Electric’s public relations department took to Twitter this week to push back against a report that the company would pay no federal income tax for 2010 — but the company’s aggressive approach was followed by faltering responses to questions from Twitter users. The campaign had the opposite effect from what the company intended, writes Henry Blodget. “[L]et this be a lesson to you, corporations … once you assert something on Twitter and then go silent when you are asked simple questions about it, the folks you’re trying to snow are going to conclude that you’re just trying to spin them,” Blodget writes.

Ryder Media Mentioned in Lee Odden’s Public-Relations Daily

Last Saturday I initiated my typical Twitter routine and saw @RyderMedia was part of Lee Odden’s Public-Relations Daily.

Mr. Odden is the CEO of TopRank Online Marketing, a digital marketing and public relations firm specializing in strategic internet marketing consulting, training and  implementation services including: online PR , search engine and social media marketing.  As an active thought leader in the search marketing industry, he contributes to top industry publications such as Mashable, iMedia Connection and MediaPost along with publishing Online Marketing Blog, recognized by Advertising Age as one of the top marketing blogs on the web.

He picked up an article with Nimble CEO, Jon Ferrara – a friend of mine who is changing the face of CRM, written by the folks at smallbiztrends.com.

It was a good day and made the holiday weekend that much sweeter to see @RyderMedia on the same page as @briansolis and @prsarahevans.

How the “Ground Zero Mosque” Team Tapped Into Twitter

The team behind a controversial plan to build an Islamic community center near the World Trade Center site in New York City has been using Twitter to respond to critics. Oz Sultan, the social-media consultant managing the campaign, says he has had to learn on the fly, and is dialing down his usual snark and quirky jokes in a bid to defuse the pubic relations storm surrounding the project. “People are sitting there shoving visceral and vitriol down your throat and, because of the sensitivity of the situation, at the same time, you have to be sensitive to them. It’s like post-modernism in action,” he says. Capital New York LinkedInFacebookTwitter

If Buzz Comes Naturally, Make The Most Of It

Some brands naturally attract positive word of mouth, but that doesn’t mean they can afford to rest on their laurels, writes Andy Sernovitz. If you’re lucky enough to be in this position, be sure to support your fans’ efforts to spread the word, whether by creating online groups, managing e-mail lists or even hosting offline events. Enhance Virtual Events with Social Media

Social-media tools can play an important role in coordinating virtual events, writes Jeremiah Owyang, and they can enhance the experience even before the event begins. Start by using social tools to promote the event and collect registrations, he suggests. Once the event begins, planners can encourage conversation, gauge reactions and field questions. Afterward, planners should conduct an attendee experience survey and post the results online.
