Determining The Best Online Press Release Distribution Site For Your Business

One of the many questions people ask me as a public relations social media business strategist is, “Are press releases dead?”  My response is always the same, “Absolutely not, but they have gone social.”

The standard press release has evolved to include social or some say interactive internet features. One of the most prevalent is the use of online press release distribution sites.

This is a crowded space and websites come and go without warning or change policies to their service at will. Some are free and some are not and as with most online services, some sites are better than others.

Follow these simple steps to determine the best online press release distribution website for your business needs.

1. Page Rank via Google of at least 5 or higher. Use this URL to identify the page rank of any online distribution website: http://www.prchecker.info/index.php

2. Cost – Free or Fee? One of the most popular free online press release distribution sites is PRLog. If you need a few more bells and whistles try the fee-based PitchEngine, they offer a free trial so you can easily test both services for the same price.

3. Google News –Are a fair amount of press releases published by the distribution site picked up by Google News? To find out got to Google News and do a search for the site using this template: “site:sitename.com.”

4. Traffic – If the website has no visitors then why would you want to use them to distribute your release? Try using Alexa.com, or Quantcast.com for more background on traffic and demographics for the site in question.

5. Results – If the site accepts valid submissions (you have followed all the rules) but never posts your release, they are useless. If your submission is rejected or delayed more than once, it’s time to use a different service.

To maximize your success try using multiple distribution services for publishing the same release to increase your chances of a higher placement in the Google News search results.

The Enterprise Social Media Adoption Path

There seems to be a predictable path for major enterprise as they advance towards reaping real benefits from social media. Over the past 6 years in our work globally, we certainly see some anomalies but we also see some patterns. Fewer and fewer brands question whether they should be active on Facebook or listening to customers via social listening tools or extending customer care via Twitter. It’s all about ‘how’ and ‘how fast.’

McKinsey observed in a 2009 study that 20% of the businesses active in social media were reaping 80% of the benefit. No mystery but there was a correlation between the level of activity in social media and the business value achieved. This chart summarizes the path that many brands take. It will last years.

GE’s Tweets Fail to Put an End to Tax-bill Brouhaha

General Electric’s public relations department took to Twitter this week to push back against a report that the company would pay no federal income tax for 2010 — but the company’s aggressive approach was followed by faltering responses to questions from Twitter users. The campaign had the opposite effect from what the company intended, writes Henry Blodget. “[L]et this be a lesson to you, corporations … once you assert something on Twitter and then go silent when you are asked simple questions about it, the folks you’re trying to snow are going to conclude that you’re just trying to spin them,” Blodget writes.

How Brands Are Tweeting

At the WWD Conference in New York earlier this week Twitter CEO explained how he saw his network’s business and how brands can work within it. Dick Costolo said that people shouldn’t expect Twitter to become the main internet platform because he didn’t believe in convergence:

“I see divergence. Uses of the web will become more and more different and that will continue to happen. Twitter is a sharing and discovery platform and part of a user’s connected world.”

Costolo showed how a pyramid diagram that described Twitter’s multi-level business. He explained that the difference between traditional media and Twitter was that with traditional media influence is directed and controlled through channels. At Twitter, influence is requested. www.psfk.com

Glaxo Analysis Shows The Cost Of Neglecting Social Media

A report based on an analysis of seven years of social-media data shows that GlaxoSmithKline failed to keep up with customers’ concerns over its troubled diabetes drug, Avandia. As doubts grew over the treatment’s safety, customers turned to social media to vent — and GSK missed a crucial opportunity to engage them and pass along the information they sought. “A closer eye to social media could have given GSK — and other companies in a similar situation — a better idea of what consumers were saying, and given them a leg up on reacting to address concerns,” writes Adam Gaub.
